Pliny the Elder mentioned Canaria named after many large dogs. Christopher Columbus used the islands as a base for voyages to the Americas. In 1936 General Franco began his Nationalist revolt here.

Fuerteventura is another significant island. It’s one of the largest in the Canary Islands. Fuerteventura is known for its long white sand beaches. It is a popular spot for sun and watersports. Its name means strong fortune or strong wind. The island was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2009.

Fuerteventura’s first settlers came from North Africa. The island was divided into two kingdoms. These were Maxorata in the north and Jandia in the south. The island’s conquest began in 1402 by French knights. Betancuria became the first settlement.

The climate in Fuerteventura is a hot desert climate. It is mild and windy year round. Temperatures rarely drop below 18°C or rise above 32°C. A sandstorm called Calima can bring high temperatures and low visibility.

Fuerteventura is the oldest of the Canary Islands. It dates back 20 million years. The island’s economy relies mainly on tourism. Other industries include fishing and agriculture. The famous Majorero cheese is made from goat’s milk.
