Behold the Canaletto Plaque. A small porcelain tribute to a Venetian master. It marks the spot where Giovanni Antonio Canal better known as Canaletto lived and worked. For nine years this unassuming building at 41 Beak Street in Soho housed the artist. He arrived in London in 1746. His English patrons couldn’t travel to Venice due to the War of the Austrian Succession. Canaletto decided to bring his art to them.

The Canaletto Plaque commemorates a pivotal period in his career. He painted about 50 views of London. His paintings depict a somewhat idealized London. Sparkling air and almost cloudless skies are his artistic license. He was a master of perspective. He’d often rotate or enlarge buildings for dramatic effect. He even arranged people like actors on a stage.

This approach is no surprise. Canaletto’s early training was as a theatrical set painter. His London scenes were more about the ideal image than realistic representation. His London works are different from his earlier Venetian paintings. They capture the vibrancy of the Thames. They also show the grandeur of country houses like Syon House and Alnwick Castle. Canaletto even used his London address to exhibit his work. He held exhibitions there in 1749 and 1751.

The Canaletto Plaque itself is a work of art. It’s a high-glaze plaque. Its distinctive colored wreath is typical of Royal Doulton’s work. The London County Council erected the plaque in 1925. The house itself dates back to the 1680s though it has been altered. Today a Venetian restaurant occupies the ground floor. A fitting tribute to the legacy of Canaletto who lived and worked there. Imagine the artist himself walking these very streets. His eyes taking in the city that inspired so many of his masterpieces. The Canaletto Plaque keeps his memory alive in this vibrant corner of London. It’s a reminder of his impact on art and on the streets of London itself. The Canaletto Plaque. A small detail with a big story.
