“Accidents happen” is an understatement when discussing Canal do Cascalho. This waterway known locally as Rio Cascalho presents a unique set of challenges and stories. The Canal do Cascalho is not just another canal. It’s a place where nature and urban life collide sometimes tragically.

Canal do Cascalho begins where the Vargem Grande and Morto rivers meet. It flows 4.5 kilometers to the Atlantic Ocean at Macumba Beach. Vargem Grande Bonito and Morto rivers feed into it as do the Cascalho Piabas and Portelo canals.

This area faces environmental issues. Gigogas often fill the canal. These plants cause it to overflow during heavy rains flooding nearby areas. The city has removed tons of gigogas but the problem persists.

Favelas and irregular buildings surround the Canal do Cascalho. These areas are especially vulnerable during floods. Despite these challenges the canal has potential. It could support fishing nautical activities and waterfront restaurants. However pollution especially fecal coliforms makes swimming unsafe.

Wildlife adapts to this environment. Alligators herons ducks and capybaras can be seen. Sadly many capybaras are hit by cars. Pollution is believed to contribute to the deaths of some animals.

The murky waters of Canal do Cascalho can be deceptive. At night drivers can mistake the water for asphalt. This leads to cars plunging into the canal. The canal appears shallow. However it is deep enough to submerge a car and the bottom is full of sticky mud. A lack of clear signs and barriers adds to the danger. The road is only a few feet above the Canal do Cascalho making overflows and animal crossings hazardous.

One accident occurred on May 22 2006. A car fell into the canal at night luckily no one was hurt. A more tragic incident happened on February 25 2011. Crystal da Silva Cardoso a one-year-old died after being trapped underwater for over 20 minutes. The driver lost control while trying to pass another car.

Canal do Cascalho is more than just a waterway. It is a reminder of the challenges of urban development and environmental stewardship. It shows the need for safety measures and respect for nature. As we move on remember the stories and lessons this place holds.
