The Canal de Marseille a lifeline for Marseille. It snakes its way through the landscape a testament to human ingenuity.

Imagine the year is 1839. Marseille a vibrant city faces a crisis. Its water sources are dwindling. A cholera epidemic rages. The city’s mayor Maximin-Dominica Consolat makes a bold decision. He will bring water from the Durance River. Fifty kilometers away the Durance flows abundantly. But mountains stand between the river and the thirsty city.

The Canal de Marseille was born from this necessity. Fifteen years of backbreaking labor. Eighty kilometers of canals tunnels and aqueducts. A feat of 19th-century engineering directed by Franz Mayor de Montricher. The Roquefavour Aqueduct a stunning structure inspired by Roman aqueducts. It carries the canal across the Arc valley. A marvel of engineering and a tourist attraction even today.

The canal is mostly concrete some parts stone or brick. Its flow ten cubic meters per second. A gentle slope of 0.36 meters per kilometer. Its width nine and a half meters at the top. Three meters across at the basin.

On July 8 1849 the Canal de Marseille opened. Water flowed into the city for the first time. Citizens went from one liter per day to 370 liters for domestic use. 660 liters for industry. This incredible increase made a huge impact on the city. It helped fight the cholera epidemic. It spurred economic growth. It changed the life of every citizen.

The Canal de Marseille is more than just a water source. It is a symbol of Marseille’s resilience. Its ingenuity. Its determination to overcome obstacles. It’s a source of pride for the city. It still provides two-thirds of Marseille’s drinking water. A testament to the vision of those who built it more than a century and a half ago. Today you can walk or cycle parts of its route through picturesque Provence. You can appreciate its historical significance. Its lasting contribution to the life of this amazing city. The Canal de Marseille. A story of water mountains and human triumph.
