Was Can Fàbregues once a bustling hub of the Inquisition? Right here before us stands Can Fàbregues a building steeped in history. It wasn’t just any house. It held secrets from Mallorca’s past specifically those connected to the Inquisition. In the 18th century it was linked to Jaume Fàbregues Bauzà the Inquisitor Major of Mallorca. His family’s legacy intertwined with the eventual dismantling of the Holy Office. Can Fàbregues wasn’t just their main residence. They also owned a second home in Son Servera near Pina. Interestingly even recently chains and shackles from the old tribunal were found in some local houses. The tribunal was demolished in 1820. The Fàbregues family later connected with the Villalonga family. This powerful aristocratic lineage notably gave Palma two republican mayors. Can Fàbregues thus reflects a fascinating shift from the Inquisition to liberalism. It shows the surprising evolution from religious zealots to liberal thinkers within a single family. The building itself however is more than just stone and mortar. It represents a story. A tale of power religion and societal transformation. This historical house acquired in 1985 was meant to become a visitor center. It was intended as a space to explain Mallorca’s history its identity. Unfortunately that plan was never realised. The sale of Can Fàbregues therefore is also a commentary on missed opportunities. It reflects a collective failure a lack of harmony between institutions and the spirit of the country. It signals a loss of our collective heritage. The building’s history is far from over. But its future remains uncertain. It’s a reminder that even places like Can Fàbregues can face demolition unless carefully preserved. Let’s treasure the legacy it embodies. The stories it whispers. The history it holds.
