Over two centuries of healing stand before you. Welcome to Campus Innenstadt des Klinikums der Universität München. This isn’t just a hospital. It’s a living testament to Munich’s medical history. Imagine its beginnings.

In 1813 Franz Xaver Häberl a brilliant physician oversaw the construction of the Allgemeines Krankenhaus. He didn’t just design a building. Häberl created a marvel of hygiene. He incorporated a revolutionary ventilation system. Even Napoleon was impressed by this technical feat. Häberl also designed water-flushed toilets a groundbreaking improvement for the time. He even developed special, hermetically sealed bedpans. The hospital boasted an artesian well ensuring a constant supply of clean water.

Over the next decades more buildings rose. The Poliklinik the Dr von Haunersche Kinderspital the Chirurgische Klinik. Each addition reflected the expanding specializations in medicine. The campus became a sprawling complex. It encompassed everything from the anatomical institute to specialized clinics.

In 1991 the Innenstadt clinics merged officially forming the Klinikum Innenstadt. Yet even then the campus covered a large area. The sheer scale of the place made interdisciplinary care difficult. Long distances between departments proved to be a challenge both for patients and staff.

The new Klinikum Innenstadt opened in mid-June 2021. This new interdisciplinary facility is a modern marvel. It addresses the challenges of the past. It promises efficient patient care. It offers state-of-the-art facilities for education and research.

The legacy of Häberl and generations of doctors and researchers lives on here. This place pulses with the rhythm of healing.
