San Martin Jakob is located at 1600 meters above sea level. It is nestled on the left bank of Lake Jakob. Campers and backpackers favor this spot for its exceptional charm.

Originally built in the 1950s with stone and wood, the San Martin Jakob lodge has expanded over the years. Today the lodge comfortably sleeps approximately 60 people.

The most popular route to Camping San Martin Jakob begins at Casa de Piedra. The trail starts on route 252. This is one kilometer from the road bridge over the Casa de Piedra creek. After walking 800 meters you enter a tall coihue wood. Then descend to the creek’s shores.

Cross a hanging bridge and continue into high woods. The slope becomes more pronounced. You’ll run into the creek again where there is a bridge. Cross the creek. Walk 45 minutes to reach Camping San Martin Jakob.

Dr. Christofredo Jakob inspired the refuge’s name. He was a scientist and explorer. He carefully studied the Tronador area. He also explored Moreno, Nahuel Huapi, and Pampa Linda. Jakob discovered the lagoon. Otto Meiling later baptized it with his name.

Camping San Martin Jakob also serves as a launchpad. Explore the famous Témpanos lagoon. It is a short 30-minute walk away. In early summer see ice blocks floating on the surface. You can also hike the Schweitzer Pass. Continue toward Lake Mascardi. See the Cerros Cella and Cuernos del Diablo.

Remember to book in advance during high season. This is especially important for groups. The San Martin Jakob refuge offers gastronomy and overnight services. The refuge can accommodate up to 60 people comfortably. There are two large bedrooms. They feature 50 bunk beds with blankets. During summer a caretaker lives at the refuge.
