“Every human being is an artist.” This quote from Joseph Beuys may give you a sense of what we are about to experience at Camp Site Sculpture. Camp Site Sculpture Park is a unique space. It embodies community creativity.

Camp Site Sculpture began as a personal project. Sean Mullaney, a Camp Washington resident, initiated it. He used his empty lot to showcase his sculptures. The lot was formerly occupied by two demolished buildings. Mullaney and Lacey Haslam collaborated. Haslam, an artist and Art Academy of Cincinnati staffer, helped transform the lot. It became a neighborhood gallery and community space.

Camp Site Sculpture Park embraces the philosophy of Joseph Beuys. Beuys advocated for free arts education. He believed everyone is an artist. Haslam and Mullaney created a free outdoor sculpture park. Local residents designed the works. They also incorporate photography, video, and light. The works are selected from monthly open calls.

Camp Washington’s geography sets it apart. It lies between Mill Creek and Interstate 75. This isolation has kept it a hidden gem. Manufacturing has long been central to the district. Many residents have deep roots. One resident has lived there for 64 years.

An emerging art scene enriches Camp Washington. Institutions like the American Sign Museum contribute. Wave Pool gallery and the Archive of Creative Culture add to it. Marc de Jong’s ‘Swing House’ and Artworks’ mural ‘Campy Washington’ also stand out.

These creative bursts are significant. They represent a dedication to revitalizing the neighborhood. It’s about making it a desirable place to live. It also pays tribute to its special characteristics.

Camp Site Sculpture welcomes everyone. It especially encourages Camp Washington residents. The goal is for them to contribute to the rotating exhibitions. It should become a de facto community center. Camp Site hosts Second Saturday events. These events encourage interaction with the art. People can enjoy their neighborhood in a safe outdoor setting.

Even a simple parking lot can become a gallery. Such spaces ensure access to art. They foster community engagement and growth. Camp Site Sculpture exemplifies this.
