Whispers of history linger here at Cammo Lodge Visitor Centre. Step back in time to 1710. Sir John Clerk a visionary landowner purchased this estate. He transformed the landscape. He created a stunning garden. His design centred around Cammo House. This grand house no longer stands. Vandals and fires destroyed it. Only the facade remains. It is a poignant reminder of the past.

The Cammo Lodge Visitor Centre now stands on the grounds. It offers a glimpse into the estate’s rich history. It is a haven for nature lovers. The centre provides information about the estate. It highlights the changes over the centuries. The landscape evolved from formal gardens to a more natural style. This reflects the evolving taste of the time. The Landscape Movement embraced nature’s beauty. It favoured integration with nature rather than escape from it.

Cammo Estate boasts fascinating features. There is a castellated water tower. A classical stable block lies in ruins. It’s a U-shaped structure with an octagonal tower. The grounds also include a 140-metre long ornamental canal. This was once a focal point of the estate’s beauty. It is now lined with reeds. It helps prevent erosion. This shows how even today’s landscape is influenced by past designs. The walled kitchen garden still stands though overgrown. It evokes the estate’s self sufficiency.

The Cammo Lodge Visitor Centre itself is housed in the East Lodge. This building dates back to 1879. It also houses an unusual polyhedron dial sundial. The sundial was moved there for safekeeping. This showcases the estate’s unique character. It is a blend of history and nature. The estate was bequeathed to the National Trust for Scotland. It was then feued to the District Council. They maintain it as a country park. This ensures access for all.

Today visitors can explore Cammo Estate. They can enjoy walking trails and diverse wildlife. They can also observe the remnants of Cammo House. These stand as silent witnesses to the past. The Cammo Lodge Visitor Centre is a gateway to understanding the area’s past. It also allows visitors to experience its natural beauty. It remains a testament to the vision of Sir John Clerk and those who followed. It is a place of tranquility and historical significance. It’s a beautiful spot just minutes from the heart of Edinburgh.
