Behold the Grand Çamlıca Mosque. It rises majestically on Çamlıca Hill. Its presence dominates Istanbul’s skyline. This isn’t just a mosque. It is a symbol of modern Turkey.

The Çamlıca Mosque is Turkey’s largest mosque. It opened on March 7, 2019. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan inaugurated it on May 3, 2019. Several international leaders attended the ceremony.

Planning for the Çamlıca Mosque began in 2000. Two female architects, Bahar Mızrak and Hayriye Gül Totu, led the design. Their design won second prize. The mosque cost US$110 million.

The Çamlıca Mosque can hold 63,000 worshippers. In an earthquake, it can accommodate 100,000 people. The complex includes an art gallery, a library, and a conference hall. It also has underground parking for 3,500 vehicles.

The mosque’s design takes inspiration from Classical Ottoman architecture. It evokes the style of Mimar Sinan. Some say it rivals Sinan’s Suleymaniye Mosque. Its exterior features a large box with domes. Half-domes surround a central dome. A golden crescent tops the structure.

The main dome is 72 metres high. This symbolizes the 72 nations in Istanbul. The dome’s 34-metre span represents Istanbul’s car plate number. The finial is the largest in the world. Nanotechnology was used to colour it.

Six minarets grace the Çamlıca Mosque. They symbolize the six articles of Islamic faith. Four minarets stand 107.1 metres tall. This recognizes the Seljuk Victory at Manzikert in 1071. The other two minarets are 90 metres high.

Inside, the mosque has a minimalist design. Designers used light, colour, glass, ornamentation, and calligraphy. The aim was to create a spiritual atmosphere.

The Çamlıca Mosque features a museum. It also has an art gallery and a library. The conference hall seats 1,071 people. Eight art workshops are available. A Museum of Islamic Civilisations opened in April 2022.

The architects planned a \”female-friendly” mosque. It includes a separate space for women to perform ablutions. A separate elevator leads to the prayer spaces. A childcare facility is available. The women’s prayer space holds 600 worshippers.

The first notable funeral was for Kadir Mısıroğlu on May 6, 2019.

The Çamlıca Mosque stands as a modern landmark. It blends Ottoman and Seljuk styles. Its size and features make it unique. As you gaze upon it, remember its blend of tradition and modernity. It is a place of worship. It is also a symbol of a nation’s aspirations.
