Thirty children gaze skyward. They stand in silent contemplation at the Caminos Sculptur, a whimsical yet profound work of art near Gaviotas beach in Morro Jable. Caminos, Spanish for “roads” or “paths,” is more than just a collection of terracotta figures. It’s a representation of life’s journey, the choices we make, and the paths we follow. Created by Cuban sculptor Lisbet Fernandez Ramos in 2007, Caminos Sculptur features the faces of real children, lent by parents from Pájara City Hall. This personal touch adds a layer of emotional depth to the artwork, connecting the community to its message. Each child, standing approximately 110 cm tall, is a unique individual, yet together, they form a harmonious whole. From above, the sculptures are arranged on a large Yin Yang symbol. This symbolizes the balance and interconnectedness of life’s dualities. Fernandez Ramos, who moved to Fuerteventura after exhibiting her work in Madrid, poured her heart into this creation. She envisioned the children as symbolic of growth, reaching towards the light like plants striving skyward. The Caminos Sculptur isn’t just about individual journeys. It’s about the shared human experience. The roundabout where it stands becomes a stage, a microcosm of the universe where human evolution unfolds. While originally consisting of 30 sculptures, time and the elements have taken their toll. Some figures are missing. Yet, the remaining children continue their silent vigil. They invite us to reflect on our own paths, our choices, and the interconnectedness of our lives. The Caminos Sculptur reminds us that even as individuals, we are all part of a larger journey, a shared human experience that unfolds under the vast, eternal sky.
