A flash of light, a moment captured. Here at the Camera Museum in Penang, time seems to freeze. The Camera Museum, also known as Muzium Kamera Pulau Pinang, opened its doors in September 2013. It stands proudly as the first camera museum in Southeast Asia. Located in the heart of Georgetown’s heritage area on Lebuh Muntri, the museum occupies a charming, refurbished two-story shophouse. Inside the Camera Museum, you’ll find a captivating journey through the history and evolution of cameras. Over 200 cameras are on display, spanning the past millennium. Imagine a world before digital photography, where Kodak reigned supreme. The museum offers a glimpse into this bygone era with displays of vintage film cameras and darkroom equipment. You can even explore interactive exhibits featuring camera obscura and pinhole cameras. The Camera Museum isn’t just about antique cameras. A spiral staircase, adorned with a mural of photographers by Ernest Zacharevic’s team, leads you through the museum. Downstairs, the Double Exposure cafe offers a welcome respite. Here you can savor local treats like curry puffs, chicken pie, and nasi lemak. Don’t forget to try their smooth soya bean milk. The Snap Shop offers unique camera-inspired merchandise and even rolls of film for those feeling nostalgic. The Camera Museum holds a special place in Malaysian history. It’s officially recognized in Malaysia’s Book of Records as the first of its kind in the country. As you leave the Camera Museum, you’ll carry with you a newfound appreciation for the art of photography and the fascinating evolution of the camera.
