Camberwell, an area in South London, has a rich history. It was once a small village in Surrey. Camberwell’s story is one of transformation. It evolved from a rural village to a sought-after Georgian retreat. Eventually, it became an integral part of London.

In 1086, the Domesday Book mentioned Cambrewelle. St Giles Saxon church was noted too. The name Camberwell may mean Well of the Britons. It could refer to Celtic people in an Anglo-Saxon area. Another theory says the name means Cripple Well. People with diseases may have come for healing at the church.

Camberwell Fair began in 1279. It was held in August for the Feast of St Giles. St Giles was Camberwell’s patron saint.

The construction of new bridges over the Thames was significant. It helped bypass congestion on London Bridge. This led to new local roads. Camberwell New Road opened in 1818. It linked Camberwell to Vauxhall Bridge.

By 1800, coaches ran seven times a day from Camberwell to Gracechurch Street. This helped commuters. Horse-drawn buses came to Camberwell around 1851. In 1862, a railway line extended to Camberwell. A station opened at Denmark Hill. This allowed more people to commute.

By the 20th century, Camberwell was overcrowded. The Peabody Trust built flats by Camberwell Green in 1910. The Samuel Lewis Trust Buildings followed in 1915. After World War II, redevelopment was needed. Air attacks had destroyed many houses.
