“Camberwell’s secrets? A bobby’s tale might hold the key,” whispered an elderly gentleman on a park bench near Camberwell Police Station. He winked. This sparked my curiosity about Camberwell Police Station. This imposing structure has witnessed more than a century of London life. Originally built in 1897, Camberwell Police Station served as a vital hub for local law enforcement. It housed not just officers, but also a bustling community of individuals dedicated to maintaining order. Imagine the stories held within these walls. The station, a prominent fixture on Camberwell Church Street, originally consisted of two buildings. One faced the bustling street while a second building overlooked a rear car park, providing access via Wren Street. The station boasted around 30 parking spaces, a significant number for the time. The architecture speaks of a bygone era, extending from one to three storeys in height. The station encompassed approximately 1,036 square meters, a considerable presence in the heart of Camberwell. Camberwell Police Station stood as a solid presence in the community for many years. In 1899, a PC Young walked these streets. He knew every nook and cranny, unmarried due to the low constable’s pay of a mere shilling a week. He resided in the station house, one of over twenty officers boarding there. Camberwell Police Station’s influence didn’t fade with time. It was still a hub of activity in the 1970s. A local historian recalls the station’s reputation as one of the toughest in South London. Children would often run at the sight of an officer. By 2020, the station was no longer an active police station. MOPAC (Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime) offered the freehold of the building, seeking unconditional offers. The property, vacant and awaiting a new chapter, measured approximately 0.53 acres. Part of the original building facing Camberwell Church Street remains a Grade II listed structure. It sits within the Camberwell Green conservation area and Camberwell Archaeological Priority Area. The former Camberwell Police Station stands as a testament to the ever-evolving story of London. Today, it stands as a reminder of a time when bobbies on the beat were a familiar sight. It represents a piece of Camberwell’s history, waiting to be rediscovered and reimagined.
