Four families formed the core: the Harmons, the Smiths, the Rhodes, and the Corbitts. They yearned for a deeper connection with God. They sought a life grounded in holiness. Their initial gatherings were filled with prayer and a shared desire for spiritual growth. This small group, initially under Pilgrim Glorious Church of Orangeburg, eventually found their own path. In 1963, they became Calvary Holiness Church of God. Their first church building, on Hopkins Street in Cayce, South Carolina, was a testament to their resourcefulness. It was a former house, lovingly transformed into a sanctuary. The church quickly became a beacon of faith in the community. Stories of healing and spiritual awakening spread, drawing people from all over South Carolina. Despite facing skepticism and opposition, the congregation held firm in their beliefs, knowing they were part of something special. The construction of a new church in 1969 marked a significant step. Under the guidance of Elder James C. Smith, the only brick mason in the congregation, they built a sturdy block and brick structure. They achieved this without fundraising or loans, relying solely on their faith and tithes. Later, a fellowship hall was added, further strengthening their sense of community. Calvary Temple Holiness Church flourished under the leadership of its founding pastors, Bishop Hezekiah Corbitt and Bishop James C. Smith. Their legacy lives on, inspiring current members to continue sharing the gospel. The church remains a vibrant center of faith, a place where the spirit of God is felt in every gathering.
