“A church that burns down and rises again, you say?” a skeptical voice might question. But here at Calvary Reformed Church, that’s exactly what happened. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to resilience, a beacon of faith that has weathered storms both literal and metaphorical.

The story of Calvary Reformed Church began in 1890, a time when Chicago was a burgeoning metropolis. A group of Dutch-speaking residents, longing for a taste of home, established the Second Reformed Church. Their first sanctuary was a modest chapel, but their dreams were anything but small. By 1910, they had built a new church and parsonage right here on West 65th Street. The name changed to Calvary Reformed Church in 1914, reflecting a congregation embracing both English and Dutch services.

But fate, it seems, had other plans. In 1969, tragedy struck. A fire swept through the church, leaving behind only ashes and memories. Yet, even in the face of devastation, the spirit of Calvary refused to be extinguished. Services were held in partnership with other churches, a testament to the power of community and shared faith. It took three years, but in 1972, a new Calvary Reformed Church was dedicated, rising like a phoenix from the ashes. This new building wasn’t just a place of worship, it became a community hub, offering programs like a food co-op, a music school, and even Alcoholics Anonymous counseling.

Calvary Reformed Church stands today as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. It’s a place where history whispers through the very walls, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, hope can rise again.
