The year is 1979. Calvary Pandan Bible-Presbyterian Church opens its doors. It’s a significant moment. A new branch of a church already thriving in Jurong. This wasn’t just another church building. It was a beacon of hope in a rapidly changing landscape.
Western Singapore. Jurong. A place booming with factories and high-rise apartments. Jobs and opportunities attracted people from everywhere. But something was missing. The spiritual needs of this growing population weren’t being met. There wasn’t a church.
That’s where Calvary Bible-Presbyterian Church stepped in. Rev Dr Tow Siang Hwa felt a burden to address this need. His vision of spiritual growth fueled the establishment of Calvary Pandan B-P Church. A third of Calvary’s original members joined this new venture. It was a testament to faith and community.
Calvary Pandan Bible-Presbyterian Church wasn’t just built. It was inaugurated on January 1 1973. The first service drew 34 worshippers. Young people from Taman Jurong and other Bible-Presbyterian churches answered the call. Rev Philip Heng played a pivotal role. He served as the part-time pastor guiding the church through its formative years. He was instrumental in laying the foundation of Calvary Pandan Bible-Presbyterian Church.
The church grew quickly. Soon a Mandarin Worship Service was added in September 1974. This catered to the increasing number of Mandarin-speaking worshippers. It reflects the church’s commitment to inclusivity and reaching a diverse community. The growth was a clear sign of God’s blessing.
Rev Edward Paauwe succeeded Rev Philip Heng. Rev James Chan a home-based Bible study leader also joined. He helped further advance the Gospel work. His dedication and effort significantly contributed to Calvary Pandan Bible-Presbyterian Church’s growth. He later became the full-time pastor shepherding the flock for two decades.
Calvary Pandan Bible-Presbyterian Church continues to thrive today. It stands as a testament to faith perseverance and the power of community.
