Did you ever hear of a church that almost became a homeless shelter? Right here, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Ballard, such a story unfolded. Calvary Lutheran Church has seen a lot since its beginnings in 1902. Built by the Icelandic community, it was originally known as Hallgrim’s Congregation. For decades, it served as a spiritual anchor for the community. Then, in 2009, the congregation merged with Our Redeemers Lutheran. Calvary Lutheran Church became vacant. In 2009, an interesting chapter began. The vacant Calvary Lutheran Church was almost turned into a temporary shelter for 20 homeless men by SHARE/WHEEL. A community meeting was held at the church, with emotions running high. Neighbors voiced concerns about safety and background checks for the shelter residents. While some supported the idea of using the empty building for a good cause, others worried about the impact on the neighborhood, especially the proximity to a daycare. SHARE/WHEEL members explained their self-policing rules and emphasized the need for the shelter. The meeting sparked a debate about balancing compassion with community safety. Pastor Steve Grumm of Our Redeemers promised to consider the community’s feedback. The final decision remained uncertain. Sadly, in 2013, Calvary Lutheran Church was demolished. The building that once housed a congregation and almost became a shelter made way for new homes. Much of the wood was salvaged, with a crowd gathering to watch the dismantling of this Ballard landmark. Calvary Lutheran Church’s story is a testament to the changing landscape of the community, reflecting both its generous spirit and the complex challenges it faces.
