Calvary Chapel

Did you know that Calvary Chapel’s story in Seattle began not here but as Love One Another Fellowship? Founded 46 years ago by Pastor Wayne Taylor it eventually became Calvary Fellowship. For many years this church hosted large conferences and concerts attracting people from all over the Seattle area. It was a regional church not by design but by happy accident. Its growth led to a move to its current location a former grocery store. This building in Mountlake Terrace became a hub for the community. The building was quite large and in 1997 many Seattle residents started attending. Over time things changed. The congregation shifted. The large events became less central to the church’s identity. The church’s current lead pastor Riley Taylor Wayne’s son saw a need for change. A name change reflected this evolution. Calvary Fellowship transformed into Mountlake Church. This new name reflects a commitment to the city of Mountlake Terrace a place where the church intends to remain. It is a clear statement of purpose and location. Pastor Taylor likes the name Mountlake Church. It sounds vaguely geographical evoking the imagery of mountains and lakes that are so characteristic of the Pacific Northwest. The old name Calvary Fellowship was a compromise. It was a name Pastor Wayne Taylor never really liked. Even he suggested a name change to his son when Riley took over as pastor. The change isn’t about abandoning its mission. Instead it’s about reaffirming its commitment to serving the community and embracing its new identity as Mountlake Church a vital part of Mountlake Terrace. The church remains on four acres of prime real estate. There is ongoing interest from developers but the church is committed to staying in Mountlake Terrace. They are not looking to move. They are simply evolving.
