Calumet High School. A place where echoes of cheers and whispers of history intertwine. Calumet High School first opened its doors in 1889 as Calumet Township High School. It transitioned to a Chicago Public School in 1900. The current building, a testament to architectural grandeur, was completed in 1926. Calumet High School wasn’t just a place for academics. It was a breeding ground for champions. The school’s athletic legacy is rich. The football team battled in countless Public League games, even reaching the IHSA state playoffs in 1995. The “Indians,” as they were known then, even made it to two Prep Bowls back-to-back. Calumet High School also produced remarkable athletes like Steve Murphy. He was a state champion cross-country runner in 1950. Murphy also secured two track championships in the one-mile run. The girls’ track team shone brightly in the 1970s, claiming a state title and several individual championships. Their maroon and blue uniforms became symbols of speed and grace. The school’s alumni include household names like Chaka Khan, James “JY” Young, and Kirby Puckett. From music to sports, Calumet nurtured talent that went on to grace the world’s stage. Calumet High School closed its doors in 2006 due to low enrollment and performance. Yet its legacy lives on. The building then housed two charter schools under Perspectives Charter Schools until 2020. The halls once filled with students’ laughter now whisper tales of the past. The classrooms, once bustling with learning, hold the memories of countless dreams nurtured within these walls. Calumet High School. A testament to time, a cradle of champions, and a place where history refuses to be silenced.
