Is it possible that this seemingly modest mosque holds a secret connection to a grander historical narrative? I am talking about the Çallıoğlu Camii. We’re standing before a testament to Antalya’s layered past. Antalya is a city that seamlessly blends rich history with modern charm. The Çallıoğlu Camii may not be as famous as the Yivli Minaret Mosque but it is still part of Antalya’s rich cultural heritage.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the historical context. Antalya has been a coveted location throughout history. It has seen the rise and fall of empires. The city was founded as a seaport in the 2nd century bce by Attalus II Philadelphus, a king of Pergamum. The Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans have all left their mark on this land.

The Yivli Minaret Mosque is also known as the Alaaddin Mosque or simply Grand Mosque. It is a historical mosque built by the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Kayqubad I. The mosque’s fluted minaret is decorated with dark blue tiles. It is a landmark and symbol of the city. In 2016 it was inscribed in the Tentative list of World Heritage Sites in Turkey.

The Yivli Minaret Mosque was first built in 1230 and fully reconstructed in 1373. The minaret is 38 metres high and free-standing. It is built on a square stone base, with eight fluted sections and has 90 steps to the top. The original mosque was destroyed in the 14th century. A new mosque was built in 1373 by the Hamidids on the foundation of a Byzantine church. It is one of the oldest examples of multi-dome construction in Anatolia.

Today the building houses the Antalya Ethnographic Museum. It contains clothing, kitchen utensils, embroidery, tapestries and looms, socks, sacks, kilims, ornaments, and nomadic tents. It was opened to the public in 1974.

Antalya is home to some of the world’s most stunning beaches. The historic center of Antalya is called Kaleiçi. Antalya has a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot summers and mild winters. The city is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes. Antalya is dotted with ancient ruins. The Antalya Museum is one of Turkey’s largest museums. Antalya is a paradise for food lovers. The Old Port of Antalya is a popular spot for boat tours and yacht trips.

Reflect on Antalya’s journey through time. Consider the empires that have shaped its identity. As we continue our tour, remember that even seemingly small places like the Çallıoğlu Camii contribute to the grand tapestry of Antalya’s story.
