Founded in 1907 by Frederick Meyer the California College of the Arts has a rich history. It began as the School of the California Guild of Arts and Crafts. Meyer a cabinetmaker from Germany envisioned a school blending theory and practice. The school’s early years saw it move several times. It eventually settled on a four-acre estate in Oakland in 1922. The California College of the Arts expanded. In the 1980s it rented spaces in San Francisco. A permanent San Francisco campus opened in 1996. This campus was a former Greyhound maintenance building. All activities then consolidated into the San Francisco location. The college plans to redevelop the Oakland campus for community use.
