The salty air stings your nostrils. Before you lies Caleta Salinas a landscape sculpted by time and tide.

Caleta Salinas isn’t just a beach. It’s a living testament to Fuerteventura’s history. For centuries this spot has been more than just sand and sea. It’s where the island’s history intersects with the rhythmic pulse of the ocean. Originally known as Salinas de la Hondurilla these salt flats began operating at the end of the 18th century. Before them Fuerteventura relied solely on naturally formed salt puddles.

Imagine the hard work of the salt workers. They harnessed the power of nature. The seawater rushes in during high tide. It crashes against the rocks. Then it flows into containers. From there it’s channeled into pools. The sun’s heat and the wind do the rest. They slowly evaporate the water. The salt crystallizes. It’s painstaking work demanding care and dedication.

Manuel Velázquez Cabrera a politician and businessman transformed Caleta Salinas in 1910. He modernized and expanded the operation. The salt production soared to around 700 tons annually. Today the yield is smaller but the quality remains exceptional. The Salinas del Carmen salt has won numerous awards. It’s celebrated for its superior quality throughout the Canary Islands.

Look closely. Notice the warehouse near the whale skeleton. That 20-meter-long skeleton is part of “La Senda de los Cetáceos” a project giving a second life to stranded cetaceans. This particular whale a female fin whale met its end in 2000 off the coast of Majanicho. It now serves as a poignant reminder of nature’s power.

More than just salt is produced here. Caleta Salinas creates a variety of salt products. There’s salt flower flake salt foam salt. You’ll even find salt sugar and spiced salt. The coveted foam salt is a gourmet delight. Its rich trace elements make it a highly sought-after ingredient.

Near the salt flats you can explore the Salt Museum. It’s educational and interactive. Videos interactive models and information panels tell the story of the salt workers. It’s a tribute to their dedication and their craft. Children and adults alike will be fascinated by this small museum. It’s the perfect complement to the awe-inspiring beauty of Caleta Salinas itself.
