What if I told you that this seemingly ordinary patch of land beneath our feet is more than just soil and grass? It is the site of ambition, dreams, and, some might say, a touch of controversy. Welcome to Kassel Airport also known as Flughafen Kassel-Calden.

Kassel Airport started as a modest airfield in 1970. It humbly served the city of Kassel. But the winds of change brought grander visions. A plan was hatched to transform it into a modern, regional airport. The aim was to connect Kassel and Northern Hesse to the broader European air network.

The transformation was completed on April 4, 2013. A Germania flight from Frankfurt Airport marked the opening. The airport aimed to accommodate commercial, chartered, and scheduled carriers. It also wanted to serve business and general aviation. The airport aimed high with a capacity of 700.000 passengers per year.

The early days of Kassel Airport were turbulent. Securing airlines and maintaining flight schedules proved challenging. XL Airways Germany’s bankruptcy caused initial setbacks. Tailwind Airlines reduced flight frequency due to low demand. Germania announced flights to Palma de Mallorca would resume in the summer of 2014. They also took over flights to Antalya.

The airport faced financial scrutiny and operational questions. In January 2015, Flughafen Kassel-Calden was officially renamed Kassel Airport. This rebranding marked a fresh start. However, challenges persisted. Germania reduced flights in December 2015 due to low demand.

The airport faced criticism for a lack of scheduled flights during the winter of 2016. The state government of Hesse reviewed the airport’s financial prospects. They considered downgrading it to an airfield.

In a surprising turn, Sundair, a new German leisure charter airline, stepped in. In the summer of 2017, they based an aircraft at Kassel Airport. They offered up to 13 weekly flights to Mediterranean destinations. This intervention provided a lifeline. It gave the airport a chance to prove its viability.

Despite these efforts, the airport continued to face hurdles. Amazon ended its cargo flights from Kassel in May 2017. This led to a reduction in freight operations. In 2024, Sundair withdrew its aircraft. Corendon Airlines announced they would not serve Kassel in 2025.

Kassel Airport features a passenger terminal with basic amenities. The runway measures 2500 meters long and 45 meters wide. Despite its challenges, Kassel Airport remains operational. It primarily serves business and general aviation. It also houses a flight school, an ultralight flying school, and a parachuting school.

Today, Kassel Airport stands as a testament to ambition, perseverance, and the ever-changing landscape of regional air travel. Whether it becomes a bustling hub or a quiet airfield. The story of Kassel Airport continues to unfold, one flight at a time.
