Gazing at the captivating Calanque de Sugiton, it’s easy to see why it’s the most famous of Marseille’s Calanques. Located between Marseille and Cassis, this small jewel is easily accessible from Luminy University Campus. Unlike other Calanques often closed in the summer due to fire risk, Calanque de Sugiton remains open, welcoming visitors to its stunning shores. Calanque de Sugiton is nestled within the Calanques National Park, close to Luminy University Campus in the Redon district of Marseille. It’s a true haven, boasting two small coves, each with its own pebble beach. The crystalline water and dramatic cliffs create an unforgettable panorama. The towering cliffs provide a dramatic backdrop. But be warned, these pebble beaches are small and fill up quickly. Arrive early in the morning to secure your spot. The water here is much colder than on Marseille’s beaches, a surprise for some. Shade is also scarce, so bring a hat. A notable feature of Calanque de Sugiton is the “Rocher du Torpilleur”, or “Torpedo Rock”, just a few meters offshore. Named for its resemblance to a warship, it’s also known as “Le Cygne” (The Swan) due to its likeness to a swan on the water. For thrill-seekers, the Torpilleur offers diving points over ten meters high. It’s a popular spot for underwater diving. East of Calanque de Sugiton lies the Calanque des Pierres Tombées (Fallen Rocks Cove). Its name comes from the massive boulders strewn across the beach. Access has been restricted since 2006 due to a fatal rockfall, although it is open again now, but with restrictions. Calanque de Sugiton is a fragile paradise. The area faces challenges from overuse, leading to soil erosion and damage to plant life. At times, the Calanque sees up to 4,000 visitors a day. To protect this precious environment, the park has implemented a quota system, requiring reservations during the peak summer season. Soaking in the sun, breathing in the salty air, and gazing at the turquoise water, you’ll understand why Calanque de Sugiton holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Just remember to respect this natural wonder and leave it as pristine as you found it.
