What secrets lie hidden beneath these unassuming stones? This, my friends, is the Cairn for Margaret Hall. It’s more than just a pile of rocks. It’s a silent testament to a tragic tale, a chilling reminder of a brutal crime. The Cairn for Margaret Hall marks the spot where a young woman, Margaret Hall, met her untimely end. In 1720, she was murdered by her own husband, Nicol Muschat, a surgeon, near this very place. He had grown tired of their marriage and, driven by a cold heart, took her life in a gruesome act. The locals, horrified by the crime, erected the first cairn in Margaret’s memory. Although it was later removed during park renovations, it was rebuilt in 1823 just a few metres from the original site. The Cairn for Margaret Hall stands as a stark reminder of the darkness that can reside in the human heart, and the enduring power of remembrance.
