From the ashes of a devastating naval battle, a monument rises. The Caídos del Crucero Baleares stands as a solemn tribute. It remembers the lives lost aboard the cruiser Baleares. We stand before a memorial. It’s a poignant reminder of a tragic chapter in Spanish history. The Caídos del Crucero Baleares honors the memory of those who perished during the Spanish Civil War.

The Caídos del Crucero Baleares was erected in Palma de Mallorca. It commemorates the sinking of the heavy cruiser Baleares in 1938. The Baleares, a Canarias-class cruiser, was a powerful warship. It was built in Spain by the Vickers-Armstrongs subsidiary Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval. The ship played a significant role in the Spanish Civil War.

The Baleares met its tragic end during the Battle of Cape Palos. In the early morning hours of March 6, 1938, the Baleares, along with other Nationalist cruisers, clashed with Republican naval forces off the coast of Cartagena. During the battle, Republican destroyers launched torpedoes. Two or three struck the Baleares, detonating the forward magazine. The resulting explosion caused catastrophic damage. The Baleares quickly sank, taking with her hundreds of crew members. Out of a crew of 1,206, 765 sailors perished, including Vice-Admiral Manuel Vierna Belando, the cruiser division’s commander.

British destroyers Boreas and Kempenfelt were nearby. They bravely attempted to rescue survivors. However, a Republican air attack disrupted the rescue efforts. This tragically resulted in one British fatality. The monument we see today, the Caídos del Crucero Baleares, serves as a reminder of this tragic event. The inscription on the monument reads, “Mallorca a los héroes del Crucero Baleares. Gloria a la Marina Nacional. Viva España.” This translates to “Mallorca to the heroes of the Cruiser Baleares. Glory to the National Navy. Long live Spain.” This inscription reflects the national sentiment surrounding the loss of the ship and its crew. It also reinforces the idea of the sailors as heroes who gave their lives for their country. Another monument exists in the Basque town of Ondárroa, from where many crew members originated. This further underscores the widespread impact of the Baleares’ sinking.

The Caídos del Crucero Baleares stands as a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict. It offers a place for reflection and remembrance. The monument allows us to connect with the past. It allows us to honor the memory of those lost at sea.
