In 1938, a new playground burst onto the scene in the Richmond District. It quickly became a beloved spot for families, offering a vibrant space for recreation and play. This is the story of Cabrillo Playground. Cabrillo Playground first opened its gates to the public in 1938. Its creation offered a much-needed recreational space for the growing Richmond District community. Over the decades, Cabrillo Playground became a cherished part of the neighborhood’s fabric. San Francisco voters recognized the importance of Cabrillo Playground and approved a $4.5 million bond to revitalize this community gem. The renovation project, completed in 2013, breathed new life into the playground while honoring its rich history. The historic clubhouse, designed by renowned San Francisco architect William Gladstone Merchant in 1933, received careful restoration. Merchant, the consulting architect for the San Francisco Recreation Commission from 1932 to 1939, also designed the twin clubhouse at Fulton Playground. The renovation of Cabrillo Playground updated the children’s play areas with an ocean theme, featuring dolphins, turtles, and even monstrous sea creatures. The picnic areas were renewed, and the sports courts were improved. New landscaping, pathways, and perimeter fencing further enhanced the playground’s beauty and safety. Accessibility was also a key focus of the renovation. Cabrillo Playground now boasts accessible play areas, a clubhouse, hard courts, parking, picnic areas, and restrooms, ensuring that everyone can enjoy its offerings. Cabrillo Playground stands as a testament to the power of community. The Friends of Cabrillo Playground, a dedicated group of volunteers, has played a vital role in the playground’s ongoing success. They’ve organized fundraisers, advocated for improvements, and fostered a sense of community ownership. Their efforts have resulted in additions like a hand-painted tile seating wall and a concrete ping pong table. Today, Cabrillo Playground continues to thrive as a vital hub for the Richmond District.
