“A merger? A behemoth of telecommunications?” you might be thinking as we stand before the former headquarters of CableVisión S.A. in Buenos Aires. CableVisión, once a powerhouse in Argentina’s media landscape, has a story as dramatic as any telenovela. Founded in 1981, CableVisión began humbly, serving the La Lucila neighborhood. It quickly expanded, bringing cable television to more and more homes across Buenos Aires and beyond. By 1998, CableVisión’s reach extended across seven provinces, a testament to its growing influence. The company’s trajectory took a significant turn in 2006 with its acquisition by the Clarín Group. This merger with Multicanal created a media giant, consolidating CableVisión’s position as a leading force in cable television. But the story doesn’t end there. In 2017, CableVisión merged with Telecom Argentina. This created the largest telecommunications company in Argentina, further solidifying the company’s dominance. This merger aimed to create a “quadruple play” service, combining fixed and mobile telephony, internet, and television. The Clarín Group, already a major player in print, radio, and television, now extended its reach into the realms of telephony and internet. This move, while strategically sound, raised concerns about media concentration, given Clarín’s already substantial media holdings. However, in a surprising twist, CableVisión as a brand ceased to exist in 2021. Telecom Argentina dissolved the CableVisión name as part of a brand reorganization. The services previously offered under the CableVisión brand continued, but under the new name “Flow.” So, while the CableVisión name may be gone, its legacy lives on in the vast telecommunications network that continues to serve Argentina today. The building before us stands as a quiet testament to the rise and fall of a media empire, a reminder of the ever-shifting landscape of communications in the digital age.
