A chilling wind whispers secrets through the ancient stones of Byfleet. This unassuming village holds a history far richer than its modern facade suggests. Byfleet. The name itself echoes through centuries. From its medieval beginnings in the Godley hundred a Saxon division for strategic and taxation purposes to its pivotal role in two World Wars Byfleet’s story is one of resilience and transformation.

Picture this: Byfleet in 1086. The Domesday Book records its existence. It was a small settlement then. Just 12 households existed. Seven belonged to villagers. Two were smallholders. Three were slaves. Life was hard. But Byfleet persevered.

The village blossomed near Brooklands. This motor racing circuit opened in 1907. It drew crowds and aviators alike. Byfleet’s connection to aviation soared. Major aircraft factories sprang up. Vickers a giant in the industry established its presence. Thousands of workers moved to Byfleet to work. The village nearly doubled in population in just ten years. New housing estates emerged to accommodate the influx. Byfleet transformed from a quiet village into a thriving hub of activity. Post-war Byfleet witnessed a surge in automotive businesses. Garages workshops and showrooms became commonplace. The legendary Duncan Hamilton’s racing workshop operated here. This workshop was the birthplace of his victorious C-type Jaguar at Le Mans in 1953.

Byfleet’s legacy extends beyond the mechanical. St Mary’s Church a testament to the enduring faith of its people dates back to at least the 14th century. It boasts rare wooden crosses grave markers recovered from war-torn Europe. The church’s graveyard is a final resting place for remarkable individuals. Racing driver J G Parry-Thomas aviation pioneers Harold Barnwell and Margaret Honor Wellby all lie here. Victims of the Brooklands bombing are also buried in the churchyard. Each grave tells a story.
