The BWK Wasserturm, affectionately nicknamed “Umgedrehte Kommode” by the locals, stands tall on the Stadtwerder. This imposing brick structure, reminiscent of the Malakow towers found in the Ruhr Valley coal mining region, is a testament to Bremen’s evolving need for water during its industrial boom. Originally built as a waterworks between 1871 and 1873, it was crucial for supplying the growing population of Bremen. Imagine the steam engines whirring, pumping precious water from the Weser into the tower’s massive tanks! The tower’s unique design, inspired by the High Master’s Palace of the Marienburg Castle in East Prussia, with its four corner turrets reaching towards the sky, gave it the nickname “upside-down dresser.” Even though the BWK Wasserturm no longer serves its original purpose, it remains a striking symbol of Bremen’s industrial past. Today, it occasionally hosts art exhibitions and theatrical productions, providing a new platform for creative expression.
