Did you know BW Monastery wasn’t always here in Woodlands? This majestic building the new headquarters of BW Monastery stands proudly before you. It’s more than just a temple. It’s a vibrant hub for a community of 3500 members. Before its construction in 2015 the monastery had humble beginnings. It started in 2002 under the leadership of Venerable Jing Yuan. The monastery initially rented space in Geylang. Its growth was phenomenal. Over time the need for a larger space became clear. The existing centres around the island were not enough. Members longed for a central location. This desire finally led to the construction of this impressive building.
The $15 million building cost a lot to erect. The land itself cost an additional $5 million. The impressive structure is slightly smaller than a football field. It can hold 1200 people at once. Inside you’ll find a prayer shrine. There is a 400-person multi-purpose hall a library classrooms and even a museum. The multi-purpose hall’s original capacity was planned for 700 people. Safety and security concerns however forced a reduction.
Construction began in October 2015. The grand opening in August 2017 was attended by nearly 1000 people. Among them were prominent figures like Coordinating Minister Khaw Boon Wan. Dr Lim Wee Kiak an MP was also present. The opening was a joyous occasion. It marked a significant milestone for the BW Monastery community. It was a moment of celebration. Many felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. They had finally achieved their long-held dream.
BW Monastery’s mission goes beyond mere worship. It actively promotes Buddhist education. It fosters cultural understanding. The monastery cares deeply for its community.
