The Butterfly Statue. It seems to flutter in the breeze, doesn’t it? This bronze sculpture by Llew Summers captures the playful energy of a dancer. It’s a fitting welcome to the Auckland Botanic Gardens. The Butterfly Statue was installed in 2008. It’s a celebration, an embodiment of the joy and wonder found within these gardens. Did you notice how its large scale doesn’t make it imposing? Instead, it has a light, airy quality. This playful quality was inspired by the movements of a dancer. Summers managed to translate the ephemeral grace of a dancer into the solid form of bronze. Interestingly, another artist, Paul Forrest, also features butterflies in his work at the Gardens. His “Bring Back the Natives” installation highlights the near disappearance of the Red Admiral butterfly from Auckland. While Summers’ Butterfly welcomes visitors, Forrest’s work reminds us of the fragility of nature. Both sculptures offer a unique perspective on the beauty and importance of the natural world. The gardens themselves are a living artwork. They provide a backdrop for these sculptures, enhancing their impact. Take a moment to appreciate the interplay between art and nature here at the Butterfly Statue. Let its playful spirit inspire you as you explore the wonders within the Auckland Botanic Gardens.
