It’s a haven for nature, recognized by the World Database on Protected Areas. Butendieker Gehölz has a unique connection to a groundbreaking project. In the year 2000, plans began for the Butendiek Offshore Wind Farm. This wasn’t just any wind farm. It was envisioned as an “Offshore-Bürgerwindpark,” a community wind farm. The idea was to involve local citizens and boost the regional economy. Over 8,000 private investors, many from the Bremen area, joined the project by 2001. The Butendiek project faced hurdles and triumphs. In July 2001, an application conference was held with the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. Then, on December 18, 2002, Butendiek received approval, becoming only the second such project in Germany. The approval allowed planning to continue, but it came with conditions. Environmental studies revealed high numbers of porpoises and loons in the area. The project had to ensure their protection. Butendieker Gehölz stands as a testament to this balance between progress and preservation. The Butendiek project changed hands several times. In 2007, Airtricity/Scottish and Southern Energy acquired it. Then, in 2010, wpd took over. Significant milestones followed. In 2011, major supply contracts were signed. The unconditional assurance of grid connection was granted. By December 2012, new investors were on board, including Siemens Financial Services and Marguerite Fund. Financial close, including debt financing of approximately €1.3 billion, was achieved in February 2013. Butendieker Gehölz reminds us of the complex interplay between nature and human endeavor.
