Bronze gaze fixed south this is Busto a Morelos. Here stands a monument to a complex figure. José María Morelos y Pavón was an insurgent priest. He fought for Mexican independence.

The Busto a Morelos isn’t just any statue. It has a past. It even faced rejection before finding its place here. The governor of Mexico State originally commissioned it. It was meant for San Cristobal Ecatepec. The city later renamed itself for Morelos in 1877.

But the statue never reached its intended destination. Antonio Piatti an Italian sculptor carved it in 1865. It was erected in the Plazuela de Guardiola. Wealthy families hated the statue. Emperor Maximiliano however placed a plaque. It honored Morelos’s fight for freedom.

Maximiliano’s reign fell in 1868. The statue was moved quickly to the Plaza de Santa Veracruz. Later in the 1870s it arrived here. This spot is on Avenida del Trabajo. It marks the eastern edge of Tepito. Back then Colonia Morelos was on Mexico City’s outskirts. This was an entrance to Tepito’s Barrio Bravo.

Ángel Tarrach created another statue of Morelos in 1969. This one stands on the road to Chapultepec Castle. Tarrach was a Spanish artist who found success in Mexico. He also sculpted Abraham Lincoln’s statue in Ciudad Juárez.

The Busto a Morelos stands as a reminder. It recalls Mexico’s struggle for independence. Morelos left the altar. He fought and died for his country’s freedom. This statue faced rejection and relocation. It finally found a home. It watches over the city. It serves as a testament to a hero’s legacy. Take a moment to reflect on Morelos’s impact. Remember his dedication to Mexican liberty.
