Was this building always air-conditioned? Many students walking the halls of Bussey Middle School probably don’t realize it wasn’t. Bussey Middle School, the oldest middle school in Garland, Texas, has seen its share of renovations since it was built in 1959. In the early 1970s, air conditioning was a welcome addition. However, the open-air breezeway remained for a bit longer. Can you imagine it being entirely open to the elements? Students must have been freezing during the winter and soaked when it rained! The breezeway even had recycled AstroTurf at one point. Can you imagine the interesting games of tag the students played on that? In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Bussey Middle School underwent significant expansions, including adding a fourth wing, a new library, a competition gym, and updated science labs. More recently, the school benefited from renovations to the choir and band hall and new flooring and roofing throughout the building. Bussey Middle School continues to provide its students with a modern and inspiring learning environment.
