Driven by the relentless winds of the North Sea, what secrets does this brick archway hold? This is the Busse-Denkmal. We’re standing before a monument erected in 1936. It honors Friedrich Busse. He was a shipowner from Geestemünde. The Busse-Denkmal marks a pivotal moment. It was the commissioning of the fishing trawler Sagitta in 1885. This event signified the start of modern deep-sea fishing in Germany.

The monument’s outer inscription speaks volumes. “Zäher Fleiß ringt es der Erde ab – gigantischer Mut dem Meere – unserem Volk gegen Hunger zur Wehre.” This translates to: “Tenacious diligence wrests it from the earth – gigantic courage from the sea – to defend our people against hunger.” These words encapsulate the spirit of the fishermen and Busse’s contribution.

Initially, there were plans for two memorials. One for Busse and another for the sailors lost at sea. While the Busse-Denkmal was realized, the memorial for the seafarers never came to fruition. The Busse-Denkmal was inaugurated in 1936. Hermann Göring was present at the ceremony.

The Busse-Denkmal has been a protected monument since 1978. It stands as a reminder of Bremerhaven’s maritime heritage. It honors a man whose vision changed an industry. The monument uses blue-fired clinker. Sandstone reliefs contrast with them. These reliefs depict fishing scenes. Schools of fish surround them in plastic-formed clinker.
