How about a story of transformation? This is the story of the Business Academy Bexley. It is now known as Harris Garrard Academy. It stands before us.
The Business Academy Bexley began in 2002. It was a city academy. 3E’s Enterprises sponsored it. Later, GEMS Education acquired 3E’s. David Garrard donated money. He was chairman of the Minerva group. His donation was £2.5 million.
The school moved to new buildings in 2003. The primary school opened in 2004. By 2007, there were 1477 students. The school cost £31 million to build. Norman Foster designed the building. Some compared it to a smart city office. It was even nominated for the Stirling Prize in 2004.
However, the Business Academy Bexley did not thrive as expected. By 2007, it was at the bottom of Bexley’s school league tables. Yet, in 2008, GCSE results improved. It surpassed other non-selective schools in Bexley.
In 2010, the school faced a £500,000 deficit. Repairs to the building were costly. Attracting staff was also difficult. Many headteachers came and went. Student numbers fell to about 1,100. This made the deficit worse.
The Business Academy Bexley appeared on TV. It was featured on Channel 4’s “Derren Brown: How to be a Psychic Spy” in 2011.
Ofsted inspected the school in 2016. The school was placed into special measures. The school performed poorly.
The Harris Federation took over in 2017. The school was renamed Harris Garrard Academy. After joining the Federation, the primary school gained a literacy specialism.
Now, Harris Garrard Academy is rated as “Good” by Ofsted. Ofsted notes high expectations for pupils. The school is one of the most improving in Bexley.
Sir David Garrard’s contribution is significant. He invested nearly £2.5 million. The school renamed itself to honor him. It was to recognize his financial and personal support. He gave about £5 million to the school overall. Tony Blair once hailed the school as the future of state education.
The Business Academy Bexley had a challenging past. It faced financial difficulties and poor inspection results. It has transformed into a successful academy. It now provides quality education.
