The Bushey Museum officially opened in October 1993. Volunteers run it. But before it even opened, it won an award. It achieved Full Registration with the Museums and Galleries Commission. The Bushey Museum won joint first prize in the Gulbenkian Foundation Awards. This was for the best achievement by museums with limited resources.
The Bushey Museum building itself has a history. It was built in 1909. It originally housed the offices of Bushey Urban District Council. In 1974, it became part of Hertsmere Borough Council. You can even see the initials BUDC and the date 1909 over the main door.
Inside the Bushey Museum, you’ll find a treasure trove of local history. The Bushey Museum Trust has collected many artifacts, documents, maps, and artworks. These displays focus on Bushey’s artistic history.
One notable aspect is the Monro Circle. The Bushey Museum showcases works by members of this group. The museum also holds a significant collection. This collection relates to Sir Hubert von Herkomer RA and his famous School of Art in Bushey. A century ago, his school attracted students from all over the world.
You’ll also find works by Lucy Kemp-Welch. She was Herkomer’s student. Her cousin Margaret Kemp-Welch and Lucy Marguerite Frobisher are also featured. Frobisher was Kemp-Welch’s companion and protege. The Frobisher Studio at the Bushey Museum functions as a teaching space.
The Bushey Museum illustrates Bushey’s social history. You’ll find historical maps and archaeology. These range from earliest times to the present day. There are examples of products made in Bushey. These include Lotts Bricks, Ellams Duplicators, and Bushey Heath pottery. Displays also show life in the village during peace and war.
For those interested in research, the Local Studies Centre has a wide range of local records. Census material is available for inspection. The Bushey Museum regularly hosts exhibitions. These exhibitions examine different aspects of Bushey’s artistic, social, and business heritage.
The Friends of Bushey Museum actively support the museum. With around 800 members, it is one of the largest such organizations in the country. The Friends organize monthly meetings. They also undertake visits to other museums and places of interest. Social and fundraising events are also on the agenda. They support the Bushey Museum by providing manpower. Also they raise funds for new acquisitions.
The Bushey Museum is open Thursday to Sunday. The opening times are from 11 am to 4 pm. Entry is free.
