Here at Bush Hill Park URC, community whispers through every brick. This church started small. It grew from a simple need in a developing area. It all began with the arrival of the railway. Cheap travel to London spurred growth. The 1880s saw the beginnings of Bush Hill Park URC.
Early pioneers recognized the need for a church. In 1887, they built the Avenue Hall on Main Avenue. This hall served as the original meeting place. Today, the Council owns it. It is now known as the Wheatsheaf Hall. It serves community purposes. The year 1887 marks the church’s beginning.
Bush Hill Park URC did not become a Congregational Church until 1902. It then affiliated with the London Congregational Union. The present site was purchased in 1903. Construction of the current buildings took less than five months. This happened in 1909.
The Hall, kitchen, and another room were added in 1932. During World War II, air raid shelters were built. They adjoined the hall. These shelters now serve as storage. The entire building has been re-roofed in the last ten years. Refurbishment of toilet facilities and the kitchen occurred in 2008.
In 2020 and 2021, the church hall underwent a complete refurbishment. Various organizations now use it. Bush Hill Park United Reformed Church is moderate and adaptable. The worship style is neither charismatic nor ultra-traditional. There is a strong emphasis on scripture and Biblical teaching here.

The Elder’s Meeting ensures regular public worship. They preach the word. They share spiritual and pastoral oversight with the minister. It advises the Church Meeting. It ensures local church representation at synod. The church is part of Thames North Synod.
Synods send representatives to the General Assembly. This assembly makes policy decisions. These decisions are for the national URC. They follow consultation and debate. All meetings are held in the belief that the Holy Spirit guides members. This happens in their decision-making.
