Did the aroma of freshly milled flour ever lead you to a hidden gem? Right here, where the Zschoner Grund valley opens its arms, stood the Busch-Mühle. It was a place where the rhythms of nature and human endeavor intertwined for centuries. The Busch-Mühle wasn’t just a mill. It was a witness to history, a source of sustenance, and a gathering place for weary travelers. The story of Busch-Mühle begins in the mid-16th century, around 1559. It was a time when Saxony’s forests were a haven for wildlife. The Elector of Saxony, August, cherished these hunting grounds. He was wary of any encroachment that might disrupt the delicate balance of nature. Benno Fehrmann von Kemnitz dared to request permission to build a mill along the Mockritz stream. This was the very spot where Busch-Mühle would eventually stand. The Elector, concerned about the impact on his beloved hunting grounds, ordered an investigation. Despite initial resistance, the mill was built. But it was short-lived. Foresters complained about the disruption caused by the construction. Other millers, jealous of the newcomer, added their voices to the opposition. The Elector, swayed by these concerns, ordered the mill’s demolition. But the story of Busch-Mühle didn’t end there. Fifty years later, Fehrmann’s son, Nikolaus, revived his father’s dream. He argued that a small mill wouldn’t harm the Elector’s hunting grounds. Nor would it compete with the existing mills. This time, his persistence paid off. The Busch-Mühle was reborn. The original structure was a simple mill, powered by the waters of the Zschonerbach stream. It served the surrounding villages, grinding grain into flour. Over the centuries, Busch-Mühle evolved. It became a Schneidemühle, a sawmill, and even housed a blacksmith’s forge. By the 19th century, it had transformed into a popular inn. Travelers, drawn by the beauty of the Zschoner Grund, sought refuge within its walls. They enjoyed the miller’s hospitality and the simple pleasures of country life. The Busch-Mühle was a place where stories were shared, laughter echoed, and memories were made. In 1904, two summerhouses were added, along with guest rooms to accommodate the growing number of visitors. The mill continued to thrive under the ownership of the Glaser, then Schiemann, and finally Gernert families. The water wheel, the heart of Busch-Mühle, turned tirelessly. It powered the millstones and later generated electricity for the inn. Even after the milling operations ceased in 1992, the water wheel remained a symbol of the mill’s enduring spirit. The Busch-Mühle, once a source of conflict, became a beloved landmark. It’s a reminder of the interplay between nature, human ingenuity, and the passage of time.
