This sprawling cemetery situated 14 kilometres east of the city centre reflects a time of rapid growth following the Victorian Gold Rush. Land was in high demand. Burwood Cemetery wasn’t always Burwood Cemetery. Initially known as Nunawading General Cemetery it later became a focal point of the Ballyshanassy settlement. The name changed to Norwood and finally Burwood in 1879.
The cemetery’s landscape is striking. It gracefully cascades down two slopes meeting in a tranquil valley. From Burwood Highway and Highbury Road its picturesque monuments and established gardens are easily seen. It became full in the 1980s. New burials are limited to existing plots. The columbarium however remains open.

Christina Cock Australia and Oceania’s oldest person lived to the remarkable age of 114 years. Her final resting place is also within Burwood Cemetery. Edward William Bill Tipping an activist journalist and social commentator is another notable burial.
