A colossal granite block dominates the landscape. This is the Burke and Wills Memorial Grave in Melbourne General Cemetery. It stands as a testament to a daring expedition. It also marks a tragic end.

The Burke and Wills Memorial Grave commemorates Robert O’Hara Burke and William John Wills. They were the leaders of the Victorian Exploring Expedition. Their ambitious goal was to cross the Australian continent. They aimed to travel from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria. This was a journey of approximately 3250 kilometers.

Their expedition began in 1860. Nineteen men embarked on this perilous journey. They were equipped with two years’ worth of supplies. Twenty-three horses and twenty-six camels helped them carry their provisions. The expedition reached Cooper Creek in November 1860. Burke then made the decision to push on to the Gulf of Carpentaria with only a small team. The main group was left behind to await their return.

Reaching their goal was only half the battle. The return journey proved disastrous. Poor leadership and terrible luck combined to create a devastating outcome. Seven men lost their lives. Only John King survived the entire expedition. The news of Burke and Wills’ deaths reached Melbourne in November 1861. This caused uproar and overshadowed the first Melbourne Cup.

A state funeral was held in Melbourne for Burke and Wills on January 21 1863. Forty thousand people attended. The bodies were then interred in Melbourne General Cemetery. The monument you see here was erected years later. It was the subject of much debate and delay. The final inscription took ten years to agree upon. The monument itself took considerable effort to erect. It was the largest block of granite ever quarried in Victoria. It weighed 36 tons and required 250 men and 40 horses to transport it.

The Burke and Wills Memorial Grave stands as a powerful reminder of exploration’s risks and rewards. It is a tribute to courage and sacrifice. It also serves as a sobering reminder of the harsh realities faced by early explorers in Australia. Take a moment to reflect on the epic journey and its tragic consequences. The monument’s sheer size speaks to the magnitude of their accomplishment and the depth of the nation’s mourning.
