Hidden on the slopes of the Godesberg, Burgfriedhof whispers tales of Bonn’s past. Burgfriedhof isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a tapestry woven with threads of history, art, and remembrance. Established in the early 1800s, Burgfriedhof occupies the grounds of the Godesburg’s former outer bailey. This location, near the Michaelskapelle, already held a Jewish cemetery from the early 18th century. Burgfriedhof itself expanded over time, growing in terraces down the hillside. This expansion continued until 1910. Today, Burgfriedhof is recognized as a protected historical monument. Wander through Burgfriedhof and you’ll encounter elaborate gravestones. They mark the resting places of prominent figures from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Burgfriedhof boasts a unique feature among Bonn’s cemeteries. It houses five mausoleums, testaments to the grandeur of a bygone era. One striking monument is a grave sculpture created by Benno Elkan in 1909. This piece, depicting the Sermon on the Mount, commemorates Pastor Karl Evertsbusch. The current cemetery chapel has its own story. Originally a mausoleum built for Dr. George Guier in 1904-1905, it was acquired by the city of Bad Godesberg in 1952. This oriental-style structure, designed by August Senz and constructed by Wilhelm Weinreis, adds an unexpected touch to the cemetery’s landscape. Burgfriedhof also holds a war memorial. This section honors 72 soldiers who fell during World War I, a poignant reminder of the cost of conflict. Burgfriedhof is the final resting place for numerous notable figures, each with a story to tell. Among them are mayors, pastors, and prominent citizens. The cemetery holds the graves of Carl August von Groote, Julius Axenfeld, Anton Dengler, Ännchen Schumacher, Josef Zander, and Herbert Wehner, all recognized with honorary graves by the city of Bonn. Burgfriedhof is more than a collection of graves. It’s a living chronicle of Bad Godesberg’s history. As you explore its paths, you’ll encounter not just names and dates, but echoes of lives lived, stories waiting to be rediscovered.
