This unassuming stone whispers tales of Munich’s ancient past. Before you stands Burgfriedensäule No. 3 a boundary stone marking the edge of Munich’s jurisdiction. It’s one of only two remaining in their original locations. Imagine the medieval city a smaller entity than today. Its borders defined not by concrete and asphalt but by sturdy stones like this one.

Burgfriedensäule No. 3 is more than just a rock. It’s a silent witness to centuries of Munich’s history. It stands at the corner of Radlkoferstraße and Hans-Fischer-Straße. A plaque added in 1906 commemorates the Burgfrieden the town peace. The inscription however contains inaccuracies. It incorrectly names the years 1735 and 1774 as dates for confirmations of the town borders. Experts believe that Burgfriedensäule No 3 is far older. It likely dates back to at least 1521.

The Burgfrieden itself was first described in 1460. However areas outside the old town were identified as belonging to Munich far earlier in 1292. Twenty-seven years later their inclusion in the jurisdiction was officially mentioned. The term “purkchfrid” appeared for the first time in 1380.

Despite later expansions this southwestern corner remained unchanged. The Burgfriedensäule No. 3 provides tangible proof. The Theresienwiese the area now famous for Oktoberfest was part of Munich even during the Middle Ages. This seemingly modest stone is a powerful symbol of Munich’s enduring history. It connects the medieval town to the modern metropolis. It links the past to the present. It’s a testament to Munich’s resilience and enduring spirit.
