Whispers of history linger in the Burgau. This Karlsruhe nature reserve isn’t just a pretty picture. It’s a testament to resilience. A story etched in the very soil.

The Burgau a combined nature and landscape protection area in Karlsruhe holds a rich past. Established in 1989 it encompasses the older Altrhein Maxau nature reserve. The Burgau’s location is strategic. It lies in the Rhine floodplains. The Rhine River forms its western border. The Karlsruhe Rheinhafen harbor is to the south. The Alb and the Karlsruhe Süd tangente road frame the east and north.

Imagine the Burgau before 1852. A largely natural area. High ridges were dry. Low-lying areas perpetually damp. Then came a transformation. Local Knielingen school children under a teacher’s guidance planted 2100 fruit trees. The Burgau was cultivated and dedicated on September 9 1853. This was the birthday of Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden.

The Burgau served a dual purpose. It was a water meadow. An 1834 aqueduct carried water from the Olschlager Bach a branch of the Landwehrkanal. This irrigation system benefited the surrounding areas. Remnants of these distribution ditches are still visible between the fruit tree rows.

The area’s ownership changed hands multiple times. Parts of the Burgau including the Maximiliansau Langengrund and Katersgrund became Baden territory in 1828 due to the Pforzheim Rhine cut. The area was once used for hunting. It later became a lucrative investment thanks to gravel extraction.

The most significant change was gravel extraction. This created the almost 80-hectare Knielinger See. Plans for a large-scale Rhine city development in the 1960s were scrapped. Concerns about environmental damage prevailed. The Burgau’s designation as a nature and landscape protection area in 1989 marked a turning point. It secured the area for nature and recreation.

Today the Burgau is a haven for biodiversity. It contains diverse biotopes. These include wetlands open water areas reed beds and shallow water zones. Steep banks meadows orchards and forest habitats are all present. Rare species like the Moor frog thrive here. Upland sandpipers and kingfishers nest on the steep banks. Thousands of waterfowl use the Burgau as a resting and wintering place.

The Burgau is more than a pretty place. It is a microcosm of ecological balance. It’s a story of human impact and nature’s resilience. The Burgau invites us to reflect on our relationship with the natural world. It challenges us to find harmony between development and preservation. This quiet corner of Karlsruhe is a living testament to the enduring power of nature.
