Rising majestically above the Plöner See stands Plön Castle a testament to centuries of history. Its imposing silhouette speaks of dukes and kings of battles won and lost.

Plön Castle isn’t just a castle it’s a living history book. It began as a simple Wendish fortification in the 10th century. This was Plune a humble structure on Olsborg Island. It met a fiery end in 1158. But the story didn’t end there. Count Adolphus II rebuilt it stronger. It served as a key base during the colonization of the area. In 1173 it relocated to its current hilltop position. This strategic move near the small town of Plön marked the beginning of the town’s rise.

The castle’s fate took a dramatic turn in 1534. During the Count’s Feud between Lübeck and Denmark Lübeck attacked Plön. The castle burned to the ground. From its ashes rose a larger successor. Then in 1564 King Frederick II of Denmark gifted a portion of Schleswig and Holstein to his brother John. Plön was part of this gift. Duke John’s rule brought economic prosperity to both town and castle.

The real transformation began in 1632. Joachim Ernst the first Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Plön ordered the old castle’s demolition. In its place he built the current Renaissance masterpiece. It was an ambitious project completed in just three years. This was during the turmoil of the Thirty Years War a testament to Joachim Ernst’s determination.

Plön Castle wasn’t just a residence. It was a cultural hub. Joachim Ernst established a library eventually holding over 10000 volumes. His successors added to this collection. He also amassed various optical devices and instruments reflecting his keen interest in physics and optics. The castle witnessed generations of dukes. Each added their own chapter. From baroque grandeur under Frederick Charles to the classicism of Christian VIII’s summer residence.

Later the castle became a military academy and even a National Political Institute. Its function changed once again after World War II hosting a boarding school. This use left its mark on the building. It fell into disrepair. Then came Gunther Fielmann. He saw the potential. His foundation purchased and meticulously restored the castle. It is now the Fielmann Academy Schloss Plön. A place where the past and present blend.

Today you can walk through elegantly restored rooms. You can explore the Rokoko splendor of the ducal apartments. You can admire the restored chapel with its 19th century murals. Each room whispers tales of past occupants. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Plön Castle. Its walls are alive. Its stones bear witness to countless stories. Today it stands not as a relic of the past but as a vibrant center of learning. It is Plön Castle a story waiting to be discovered.
