Here stands a testament to community spirit and devotion. The Burdett Estate Mosque is one of London’s best kept secrets. Opened in April 2017, it stands as a beautiful example of modern mosque design. It complements its surrounding East London environment.

The Burdett Estate Mosque began humbly. It started in a flat in 1982. This small space served for Tarawih prayers. It was also a place for Eid prayers. Children learned the Quran there. In 1984, the mosque moved to a larger building. Five daily prayers took place in adjoining rooms. Today, the mosque is located on Masjid Lane in Poplar, Tower Hamlets.

One striking feature is the glass minaret. It sits at a corner. It faces Makkah. The minaret has become an iconic neighborhood feature. Kufic calligraphy adorns one side of the building. “There is no god but Allah” repeats on special shutters. These cover the doors and windows of both floors. Sunlight shines through these panels. It projects the words into the hall.

Inside the Burdett Estate Mosque, the focal point directs prayer. The Imam’s prayer space and the Minbar are inside the minaret. The ceiling design helps sound travel. This creates a wonderful listening experience during Quran recitations. Earth tone colors give a natural feel.

The Burdett Estate Mosque was a community effort. It was part of the St Paul’s Way regeneration program. This program includes a school, play areas, and new homes.

The founders faced many challenges. Some did not live to see the completed mosque. Faruq uncle helped found the original mosque. He remembers facing anti-Muslim abuse. He recalled a pig’s head left outside the mosque. Faruq hopes the youth will get involved more. Kamal Hussain is part of the mosque’s committee. He honors the elders who planted the seeds.

The Burdett Estate Mosque has a dedicated women’s section. Many activities occur there. Kamal believes strong sisters create a strong community. He thanks Allah for blessing them with the mosque.

The Burdett Estate Mosque stands as a symbol of faith. It represents perseverance and community collaboration. It’s a hidden gem, a testament to the enduring spirit of its founders and the vibrant community it serves.
