Seventy-five years. That’s how long Burbank Manor Presbyterian Church has graced this spot on South Central Avenue. It’s a significant milestone, a testament to the enduring faith of a community. Yet, here we stand, at the cusp of a farewell. Burbank Manor Presbyterian Church, a cornerstone of Burbank since 1944, is preparing to close its doors. The last hymns have echoed, the final prayers whispered. The Christmas Eve candlelight service has flickered and faded. The pews, once filled with hundreds of families, now hold only a handful. The story of Burbank Manor Presbyterian Church began not within these walls, but in the hearts of the Church Federation of Greater Chicago. They saw a burgeoning community in Burbank, a spiritual need waiting to be met. Through their generosity, along with contributions from the Chicago Presbytery and local businesses, the dream took root. Initially, services were held in rented spaces at the park district. A few years later, this building became their home, a place of worship, community, and fellowship. In 1958, the church officially joined the United Presbyterian Church, solidifying its identity as Burbank Manor Presbyterian Church. Phyllis Urbanski, the church secretary, a lifelong parishioner, remembers a time when over 500 families filled the pews. She has witnessed the church’s journey, from vibrant growth to its present decline. The dwindling congregation, the aging members, the mounting repairs needed for the aging building – these factors converged, leading to the difficult decision to close. As the final chapter closes for Burbank Manor Presbyterian Church, a sense of bittersweet nostalgia hangs in the air. A community bids farewell to a cherished landmark, a place where generations celebrated, mourned, and found solace. While the building may fall silent, the memories and the spirit of Burbank Manor Presbyterian Church will live on in the hearts of those who called it home.
