“Engelsburg” they called it. The Bunker Töpferweg earned this nickname drawing a parallel to the famed Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome. Here before us stands not just a bunker but a unique structure. This round bunker is unlike any other of Lübeck’s air raid shelters.

Completed in 1941, the Bunker Töpferweg was a response to the growing threat of aerial attacks. Imagine Lübeck during those dark times. The need for safe refuge was paramount. This bunker was designed to provide it.

Otto Hespeler, head of the air protection construction department proposed several designs. He sought to integrate these shelters into the cityscape. Architect Carl Mühlenpfordt was tasked with the detailed planning. His vision shaped the Bunker Töpferweg we see today.

What sets this bunker apart? It is the only free-standing tower bunker of twenty in total. Its four stories are accessed by external staircases. The top floor is set back creating a distinctive profile.

Initially, the Bunker Töpferweg provided 880 square meters of usable space. It was hastily opened in 1942. Later family compartments were added. The bunker offered space for almost 900 people seeking safety from air raids.

After the war, demolition was ordered. Fortunately, the Bunker Töpferweg was spared. It was refurbished with 778 places. From 1989 it served again as an air raid shelter. It was ready for any potential catastrophe.

The city decommissioned the bunker in 2008. A federal order initiated the removal of bunkers from the civil protection program. In 2014, the Bunker Töpferweg gained protected status. This secured its preservation.

Now fast forward to today. The Bunker Töpferweg has a new role. The Stadtwerke Lübeck operates a combined heat and power plant within its walls. This former shelter now provides energy. It heats the city.

Consider the Bunker Töpferweg. It is more than concrete and steel. It is a symbol of Lübeck’s resilience. It stands as a reminder of a turbulent past. It has been transformed into a source of power for the future. The “Engelsburg” has truly found a new purpose.
